How to Choose a Mobility Scooter

The short answer

First decide whether the scooter needs to travel in a car or stay assembled at home. For car trips, compare the heaviest piece you will lift. For home use, measure doorways, corners and storage space. Then check seat fit, tires, suspension, range and speed.

Decide how the scooter will travel

If the scooter must go in a car every week, choose around the heaviest piece you can safely load. Total scooter weight is useful, but the part you actually lift is more important. If it will live assembled at home, focus instead on the route from its storage spot to the places you use it.

Portable does not always mean light

The Golden Buzzaround XL+ is 97 lb assembled and separates into five pieces. Its heaviest piece is 42.5 lb. The Golden Buzzaround EX GB148 also comes apart, but it is 161 lb assembled and its front section is 53 lb.

The Shoprider Chameleon GK-84 is 94 lb with batteries and uses a connectorless frame. The Shoprider Spirit GK-10 disassembles too, though the manufacturer does not publish the heaviest piece on its current page. Also compare the Pride Go Go Endurance AL+ 4-Wheel, which separates into five pieces, and the Pride Go-Go Sport 4-Wheel, which also disassembles for transport.

Measure the trunk opening as well as the trunk floor. A scooter can fit on paper and still be awkward if the heaviest section has to be lifted high or turned inside the opening.

2Measure once

Turning space matters as much as width

Width tells you whether the scooter clears a doorway. Turning radius tells you whether it can make the corner after the doorway. Measure the narrowest opening on the route and the smallest place where you need to turn around. Include the front basket and allow space for your hands and elbows.

Compare the space needed to turn

The Shoprider Chameleon GK-84 has a 37 in turning radius; the Golden Buzzaround XL+ needs 39 in. WHILL Model R is 38.2 in, and Pride Go Go Endurance AL+ is 38.39 in with EZ Turn steering. Compare those figures with the actual corners and turning areas on your route.

The Bigfoot S846 needs 63 in to turn, while the MOVO Mach is 28 in wide. Larger frames need a realistic plan for storage and manoeuvring.

Movo currently publishes two different widths for the Brome, 24.6 in on the product page and 25.2 in in the linked manual. Confirm the actual scooter before relying on that measurement.

3Where you actually ride

Match the tires and suspension to the route

For smooth indoor floors and paved paths, compact flat free tires are simple and low maintenance. For cracked sidewalks and longer outdoor routes, larger tires and suspension usually matter more than maximum speed. No scooter should be chosen from the words outdoor or heavy duty alone.

Tyre size and suspension solve different problems

Larger tires roll over small surface changes more easily. Suspension reduces how much of the remaining movement reaches the seat. The MOVO Sutton combines a full size frame with Movo's front and rear suspension. The MOVO Mach adds adaptive suspension with 14 in front and 16 in rear pneumatic tires.

The Shoprider TrailBlazer 889SL/SE uses full suspension and 13.5 in tires. The Bigfoot S846 uses front and rear suspension with 12 in tires. The Pride Colt Sport 4-Wheel is another option with front and rear CTS suspension and pneumatic tires.

Compact and flat free

The Shoprider Chameleon GK-84 has 7 in front and 8 in rear flat free tires. The Shoprider Spirit GK-10 has 10 in flat free tires.

Suspension in a smaller frame

The Golden Buzzaround XL+ uses 8 in foam tires with front and rear comfort springs. The Golden Buzzaround EX GB148 has 9 in solid tires with comfort spring suspension.

Balanced neighbourhood use

The MOVO Brome has 11 in wheels and front and rear suspension. The Shoprider Explorer 888SLN has full suspension with 10 in tires.

Pneumatic tires can soften the ride but need pressure checks. Solid and foam filled tires avoid flats but do not replace suspension. Ask about the exact route, not an all terrain label.

4Comfort and control

Check the seat and tiller before the motor

A scooter can have the right range and still be wrong if the seat edge presses, the tiller sits too far away, or the throttle is difficult to hold. Check seat width, swivel access, fore and aft adjustment, armrest position, tiller angle and whether the display is easy to read in the light where you ride.

A captain seat suits longer days

The MOVO Brome uses a swivel mid back seat with a headrest and sliding mechanism. The MOVO Sutton uses a captain seat. These are different from the lighter stadium style seat on the Golden Buzzaround XL+.

The larger seat may improve support, but it also adds weight and space. The right choice depends on how long you sit and how often the scooter needs to be moved.

Controls should be readable and comfortable

The MOVO Mach has a digital display and contactless key card start. The MOVO Sutton also has a digital display. The Bigfoot S846 includes an LCD dashboard.

The Shoprider Explorer 888SLN and Shoprider TrailBlazer 889SL/SE use delta tillers. A test of the throttle and tiller reach is more useful than a feature list when hand strength or shoulder movement is limited.

5Know the tradeoff

Compact, portable and full size are different tools

There is no best scooter size for everyone. Compact scooters favour transport and tight turns. Portable full size models carry more battery and seat support but their pieces are heavier. Midsize and full size scooters favour outdoor comfort and capability, while asking for more storage and turning space.

The middle category is often the most balanced

The MOVO Brome and Shoprider Explorer 888SLN sit between compact transport scooters and the largest outdoor models. Both provide suspension and longer published range without reaching the width of the MOVO Mach.

The right middle ground depends on your route. A scooter that feels manageable in an open showroom can feel much larger at a hallway corner or beside a parked car.

Compact and transportable

Start with the Shoprider Chameleon GK-84 or Golden Buzzaround XL+ when car loading and turning space lead the decision.

Portable with more substance

The Shoprider Spirit GK-10 and Golden Buzzaround EX GB148 disassemble, but both need a realistic lifting plan.

Full size outdoor comfort

The Shoprider TrailBlazer 889SL/SE, MOVO Sutton, Bigfoot S846 and MOVO Mach suit customers who have room for a larger assembled scooter.

6Use as a tie breaker

Range and speed come after fit

Choose enough published range for your longest normal route, plus a sensible margin. More is not automatically better. Larger batteries add weight and charging time, while maximum speed does not solve a poor turning circle, an uncomfortable seat or a route the tires do not suit.

Published range is a comparison, not a promise

Manufacturers test in controlled conditions. Rider weight, hills, surface, tire pressure, temperature, wind, stops and battery condition all change the distance you get. The MOVO Mach is published at up to 40 km and 18 km/h. Its large frame, 80 Ah batteries and 1300 W motor are part of that package.

If your normal day is much shorter, a compact scooter with less published range may still be the better decision because it fits the home and car more easily.

7Before you choose

Walk the route with a tape measure

Measure the real route from storage to the street, car or destination. A few minutes with a tape measure answers more than another hour of comparing feature lists.

Write down these seven answers

Doorway: the narrowest clear opening. Turn: the smallest corner or landing. Storage: the parked footprint and charging outlet. Surface: smooth floor, cracked pavement, gravel or grass. Slope: the steepest regular incline. Seat: time seated and room needed. Transport: who loads it and how high they lift.

Six mistakes worth avoiding

Choosing full size comfort before planning storage. The larger seat and tires need a wider route, a larger turning space and a nearby place to charge.

Calling a scooter portable because it comes apart. The heaviest piece still has to be lifted into the car. Check that number and the lift height.

Buying on maximum speed. A faster scooter is not a better scooter if it cannot turn in the home, fit the seat or manage the normal surface comfortably.

Treating published range as guaranteed distance. Hills, cold, rider weight, tire pressure, stops and battery condition all reduce real range.

Assuming larger tires make every route suitable. Tire size, tire type, suspension, ground clearance, turning space and slope all work together.

Using weight capacity as a seat measurement. Capacity tells you the supported load. It does not tell you whether the seat width, armrests and tiller position fit the person comfortably.

Compare the heaviest transport piece with what the person loading it can safely lift. The XL+, Chameleon, WHILL Model R and Go Go Endurance AL+ separate for transport; the EX and Spirit need a heavier lifting plan. Which mobility scooter brands do you carry?

This collection includes mobility scooters from WHILL, Pride Mobility, MOVO, Golden Technologies and the Shoprider range supplied by Eclipse Medical. The Bigfoot S846 is also included, and Eclipse now presents that model under its own Trailmaster range. The available models can change, so use the product grid above as the current list.

Do these scooters need to be assembled?

Preparation varies by model. Compact and portable scooters may arrive in sections designed to reconnect without tools, while full size scooters are much heavier and are normally used assembled. Contact Care Made before ordering if you need to understand the box size or setup for a particular model.

How long do the batteries last?

Battery service life varies with battery type, charging routine, storage temperature, depth of discharge and how often the scooter is used. There is no reliable category wide number for every scooter. Follow the charging and storage instructions in the exact model manual, and ask Care Made about the correct replacement battery when performance begins to change.

Can I take a mobility scooter on a plane?

Do not assume a scooter can fly because it is called portable or uses a lithium battery. Acceptance depends on the exact battery, how the scooter is handled, its dimensions and weight, and the airline's current rules. Full size scooters in this collection are mainly intended for ground transport. Confirm the exact model and battery with the airline before booking.

Are mobility scooters tax free in Canada?

Mobility scooters are generally treated as zero rated medical and assistive devices in Canada when the applicable conditions are met. Care Made's checkout applies the store's current tax treatment.
