Choosing the Right Wheelchair Cushion

A good wheelchair cushion is the difference between sitting comfortably for hours and dealing with pressure sores or chronic discomfort. The right cushion depends on how much time the user spends in the chair, their skin and posture needs, and budget.

Foam, Gel, or Air. Which Cushion is Right?

Foam cushions

The most affordable option. Good for users who spend a few hours a day in their chair. Provide consistent support but offer minimal pressure redistribution. Best for low to moderate use.

Gel and gel/foam cushions

Add a gel layer or pocket on top of foam. Gel disperses heat and pressure better than foam alone. A solid mid tier choice for daily users with mild to moderate skin protection needs.

Air cushions (ROHO style)

Adjustable air cells under the user. Highest level of pressure redistribution available without a custom seating system. Best for full time wheelchair users and anyone with a history of pressure sores. More care required (check inflation regularly).

How to Choose the Right Size

Width

Match the wheelchair seat width. Standard sizes are 16, 18, and 20 inches.

Depth

Match seat depth. 16 inch is most common.

Profile (height)

2 inch profiles are the standard. 3 inch profiles add more pressure relief but raise the user higher in the chair.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a wheelchair cushion be replaced?

Foam and gel cushions typically last 1 to 2 years with daily use, longer for occasional users. Air cushions last 3 to 5 years if maintained. Replace sooner if you notice the cushion bottoming out or the cover wearing through.

What weight can a wheelchair cushion support?

Most foam and gel cushions support up to 250 to 300 lb. Air cushions like the ROHO adjust to the user, so weight is less of a limit. Tell us the user's weight and chair size and we will match the right cushion.

Will the cushion cover stay clean?

All of our cushion covers are removable, machine washable, and water resistant. Air cushions also have a wipeable shell underneath the cover.

Can a cushion fit any wheelchair?

Most standard wheelchair cushions fit any wheelchair as long as the seat dimensions match. Tell us your chair size and we will confirm the right fit.

Are wheelchair cushions tax free in Canada?
