A folding scooter trades a bit of range and seat comfort for one big advantage: it fits in the trunk of a car, the closet, or under a table. If you travel, fly, or just want a scooter that lives somewhere other than the front hall, this is the right category.

How to Choose

  • Total weight. The lightest folding scooters are 40 to 50 lb. Many split into two pieces (frame and battery) so each piece is even lighter to lift.
  • Folding mechanism. Manual fold (you do the work) versus electric fold (push a button). Electric fold helps users with limited grip strength.
  • Range. 10 to 25 km per charge typical. Lithium batteries common in this category.
  • Capacity. 250 lb is standard. Some models go up to 325 lb.
  • Wheels. 3 wheel scooters turn tighter (good for indoor use). 4 wheel scooters are more stable on uneven ground.
