In a store, a walker is the basic light frame with two front wheels and no seat, meant for short distances indoors, down a hallway or to the bathroom. It is not designed for sidewalks or uneven ground. A rollator has four wheels, hand brakes and a built in seat, works indoors and outdoors, and lets you stop and rest whenever you need to. When someone says they want a walker, a rollator is almost always what they actually mean.

Wear your usual shoes, stand as straight as you comfortably can with your arms relaxed at your sides, and measure from the floor to the crease of your wrist. That measurement is your ideal handle height. Check it falls within the adjustment range of the model you are considering, because those ranges vary by several inches between models.

Push both hand brake levers firmly downward until they click. That is the park position, and it locks the wheels so the frame cannot roll. Sit only once both brakes are locked, and leave them locked while you are seated. Squeezing the same levers upward toward the handles is what slows you down while walking.

Three models arrive fully assembled: the byACRE Carbon Ultralight, the byACRE Carbon Overland and the Drive AeroWalk Ultra Lite. Unfold them, set the handle height, and they are ready to walk with. The Evolution Trillium is close behind, with only the backrest to fit. No. Handle height adjusts on every rollator we carry, but seat height is fixed by the frame, so you choose it by picking the right size. The Evolution Piper comes in four seat heights from 17 in to 23 in, the byACRE Carbon Ultralight is 22.4 in in Compact and 24 in in Regular and Wide, and the Evolution Xpresso Wide comes in a 22 in and a lower 19 in version. Tell us the inside leg measurement and we will work out the size with you.

Most four wheel rollators fold along their length, so they collapse narrow and usually stand up on their own. Side folding models such as the Hugo Sidekick and the Airgo Fusion F18 collapse across their width instead, which suits a narrow gap beside a car seat. The byACRE Carbon Ultralight folds to roughly 9.8 in across.

The byACRE Carbon Ultralight at 10.6 lb, followed by the Drive AeroCarbon Ultra Lite at 11.5 lb and the Evolution Piper at 12 to 13 lb. The three wheel Drive Winnie Lite Supreme is lighter still at 11 lb, though three wheels give up some of the steadiness four give you. Anything under about 15 lb is comfortable for most people to lift into a car. The lightest walking aid we carry overall is the MD by Drive Air Go at 8 lb, but that is a two wheel walker rather than a rollator, so it has no seat and does not roll along with you.

The byACRE Carbon Ultralight. It weighs 10.6 lb and folds to about 9.8 in across, so it can be lifted one handed and lies flat rather than wedging across the trunk. The Drive AeroCarbon Ultra Lite is next at 11.5 lb, and the Evolution Piper at 12 to 13 lb is the lower priced option.

For indoor use and tight spaces, 6 to 8 in wheels turn most easily. For everyday mixed use including sidewalks, 8 in is the sensible default. For gravel, grass, uneven pavement or thresholds, choose 10 in or larger. Wheel size affects your daily experience more than almost any other specification.

Most walkers and rollators are rated to 300 lb. We also carry heavy duty models rated higher, including the Drive Nitro HD and Evolution Xpresso Wide at 450 lb, the Human Care neXus 3 at 441 lb, and the MOBB Aluminum Folding Rollator at 400 lb. Note that the Evolution Trillium and Xpresso Lite are rated to 300 lb in standard sizes and 350 lb in the Tall size only. The rating is listed on every product page.

Not always. On Evolution rollators, CF stands for cable free, meaning the brake mechanism runs inside the frame with no exposed cables. The genuinely carbon fibre rollators we carry are the byACRE Carbon Ultralight, the byACRE Carbon Overland, the Drive AeroCarbon Ultra Lite at 11.5 lb and the Drive Nitro Elite CF.
